Introduction

In order to get independent vertical and horizontal control over parts of the cross section or to create a String that doesn't try to 'connect' to Road Strings, use this command.

An independent String/Profile would be useful in the following design processes:

Use this command to create an independent String/Profile.  Any String can have cross sections assigned and be included in a model.

To assign the vertical and/or horizontal geometry of the String/Profile to the cross section the following steps are required:

  1. From the Vertical Grading Editor for the Road cross section requiring String/Profile control
  2. Open the Design Data form
  3. Apply the Use Profile command to assign the string/profile to a cross section label

Details

Independent Strings/Profiles can be used to affect the cross section of another Road String or can be assigned it's own cross sections and be included in a model (with the exception that it doesn't form 'intersections' with other Roads and isn't included in the Auto Model command).

Special Note: Before commencing this command, create an alignment to provide the horizontal geometry for the profile. For Civil 3D users, the alignment does NOT need any special prefix in the alignment description.  For non-Civil 3D users, set the Alignment Type to be 'String/Profile'.

Creating a String/Profile

When the command is started the command line will prompt to select an alignment in the drawing.

Designers should pick the alignment from the drawing. The horizontal geometry of the string will be read directly from the alignment and the Designer will be guided through the process of creating an independently graded String/Profile from the alignment.

Note: If an existing Road object is selected in the drawing, then the Vertical Grading Editor will open for the profile to be edited.

If the alignment selected is NOT currently a Template in Civil Site Design then the following form is displayed:

Design Parameters
Road Type The Road Type is set to String/Profile - this will prevent it from interacting with Roads.
Select Template By default, the assigned Template is set to (None), on the assumption that this object will be used to adjust the offset and level of a Road cross section Label, rather than be used for its own cross section.

A Template can be assigned and the element treated as a Road Object for plotting, volumes and inclusion in the Civil 3D surfaces.

Select Sampling Surface Use the pick list to select the Surface to project any batters to as well as the comparison surface to see cut/fill depths for the design vertical grading.

In all respects, except for Road Type, the controls for creating the String/Profile exactly match those covered in the Create/Edit Roads command.

The functionality of the String/Profile is the same as for a Road String, minus the intersection interactions or interactions vertical with any Road String.  Strings can be included in any Model by either being associated with a Road cross section Code or via the Model Builder command.
